eeBoo has worked with our trusted Chinese printers for 30 years.
We have been to the factories; they are bright, clean, well-run, environmentally responsible facilities with technology and processes that are not available in the USA. They sponsor schools in rural areas and are certified as both ethical and green manufacturers.
The vast majority of the dollars eeBoo makes and spends stay in the USA. We pay our American employees’ salaries, American warehouse workers, truckers, dock workers, and a hundred sales reps across the country. We sell to over 3500 small stores on your Main Streets, and they in turn make money and pay their employees. We pay our taxes.
Now we must pay another tax, a 145% tariff on our own products when they come into the port, and because most of the products coming into the US from China are made by American companies, much of the China tariffs are paid by Americans.
Tariffs are designed to make it hard to compete with similar products manufactured in the USA. But in many, many cases, those products have not been made here for decades, so costly infrastructure, machinery, technology, supply chains, training, and labor –as well as the decades to develop these-- would be required before they could be made here. Much of the machinery necessary for manufacturing would need to be purchased from other countries and would be extra expensive, thanks to tariffs. Meanwhile, thousands of well-loved products found in our stores will soon be much more expensive, or no longer available.
Tariffs only make sense if there is a viable path to making those products here. Otherwise, tariffs only drive American companies, manufacturers, retailers, and everyone involved in thousands of supply chains out of business, devastating our economy.
Small businesses are particularly threatened by tariffs, because, unlike giant corporations, we lack the deep pockets to survive such a draconian war. To survive, we need exemptions and carve-outs to not be crushed under the China tariffs. Small businesses did not start this problem; 40 years ago, large firms closed plants and off-shored our American manufacturers. Today, American small businesses utilize other countries’ manufacturing because large corporations destroyed our manufacturing base to increase their profits.
Apple just got a carve-out. Tablets and I-phones get a pass. We believe our children’s access to wholesome activities away from screens should be protected. Protect America’s small businesses! Please help us by calling or writing the White House, your Senators, and Members of Congress.
