Daisy Elizabeth Adams Lampkin was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1888. She was an African American civil rights activist, suffragist, and organizer. She began her involvement in activism around 1912, when she started hosting suffrage meetings in her own home.

After spending several years working with multiple black women’s suffrage organizations, Lampkin became a devoted member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (better known today as simply the NAACP). The NAACP is a civil rights organization that has spent more than a century fighting against racial discrimination. Lampkin became the NAACP’s first national field secretary, traveling all over the United States raising money and encouraging people to join the organization. She raised over a million dollars in her time working for the NAACP.

Lampkin spent decades working for the NAACP. In 1947 she was named its Woman of the Year. She spent the rest of her life involved with the organization, and died in 1965 at age 76.
